JORDAN BRAND CLASSIC IN INSTANBUL
03/10/2010
Ten random thoughts/questions from the Jordan Brand Classic in Istanbul.
1/ Logistically how much work must the guys at Nike Turkey & at their European HQ in Amsterdam put in to get 40 of the continents best 15 year old ('94) players all in the same place at the same time?
2/ Why don't European players dunk? I saw two dunks all weekend; the rest was just players laying-up.
3/ If Nike wanted to hold this event in London could they actually find a facility with two sprung courts, side-by-side, with four stand alone baskets and seating in the capital?
4/ Why is everyone so shocked when you tell them that basketball is the second most popular participation sport in UK schools after football?
5/ If the answer to 'How do you bring more British kids through into the Euroleague or NCAA' is 'More Coaches, more facilities, more money invested in grass roots basketball' how is that going to happen?
6/ Ganon Baker holds some of the most inspirational coaching sessions I have ever seen. If this guy ever hits the UK make sure you get yourself down to the gym where he's coaching.
7/ Can 2012 really be the springboard for basketball in the UK? Participation is already high at school level so will 2012 make the game more mainstream?
8/ Could it be that one of the reasons basketball shoe sales in the UK are low is that it's almost impossible to walk into a high street retailer and get anything over size 10?
9/ Do most people in the UK get their shoes online? And if that is the case you might as well go with iD if you are getting Nike or Jordan's, right?
10/ Does Gentry Humphrey, the head of Brand Jordan, really own more kicks than MJ? If so how many is that and is it rude to ask?
