NORTH CAROLINA WIN MARCH MADNESS
04/07/2009

THE UNIVERSITY of North Carolina recorded a dominating victory over Michigan State to take the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

The Tar Heels won 89-72 in last night's title game in Detroit with point guard Ty Lawson the star scoring 21 points and recording a championship game record eight assists.

Guard Nathan Ellington scored 19 points and centre Tyler Hansbrough had 18 points in the win.

The Michigan State Spartans were the underdogs coming into the match but victories over number 1 seeds Louisville and Connecticut on their way to the Championship game, as well as a loud support meant a tight game was expected.

The Spartans only led in the first minute though and North Carolina had soon raced to a 36-13 lead with some lock down defence.

Their 55 first half points was a championship game record and the favourites never looked like letting their lead slip.

Ellington was voted MVP of the Final Four after impressive performances in the victories of Michigan State and Villanova.
