JENNINGS SLAGS OFF RUBIO
06/14/2009
Brandon Jennings, the point guard who skipped college in order to play professionally in Europe, has ripped fellow point guard draft prospect Ricky Rubio - saying that the Spanish international is overhyped.
In an S.I.com report, Jennings (who recently posed for a Slam Magazine photoshoot with Rubio - see right) told reporters following a working out for the Sacramento Kings that he is "a better player" than Rubio.
"I just shoot the ball better than he can. The only thing I've seen him do sometimes is when he has a home-run pass or something like that," Jennings was quoted as saying.
"I think the dude is just all hype. I can't even front. I'm just going to be real with you guys," he adds.
Jennings, listed at 6-foot-2, also referred to their one head-to-head matchup in the Euroleague this season, indicated he outplayed the Spanish prospect.
According to the Euroleague's official Web site, records of the said game showed Rubio scoreless with three dimes and three turnovers in just nine minutes of play.
Jennings, on the other hand, scored 12 points and dished out two assists in Lottomatica Roma's 97-93 loss to Rubio's DKV Joventut.
The 19-year-old Jennings further adds that Rubio, who has not worked out for NBA teams, would be exposed in a workout along with other point guard prospects like Curry, Ty Lawson, Jrue Holiday, and Jonny Flynn.
Unable to pass the entrance college exam for college at Arizona even after multiple attempts in June 2008, Jennings opted to skip college to play professionally in Europe.
He signed with Lottomatica Roma of the Italian Lega A on July 16, 2008.
As a result, Jennings became the first player to play for a European team rather than play for a college basketball team since the imposition of the NBA's age restriction rule.
This season, Jennings averaged 7.6 points and 1.6 assists in Euroleague action.
