BBL NEWS - EAGLES TOP JETS
03/21/2010

The Newcastle Eagles are the 2010 BBL Trophy champions, following a convincing 95-111 performance against the Cheshire Jets.

The Jets had been looking to make it 2nd time lucky after losing the Cup final earlier this season, but an early lead would also prove to be their only lead, as the Eagles took control and never let go of the game.

The Jets jumped out to a fast start, with Shawn Myers and Colin O'Reilly giving them a fast 7-0 start. About 90 seconds in Lynard Stewart finally got the Eagles on the board but it was when Reggie Jackson picked up his 2nd foul a few moments later that the game changed. In came Joe Chapman and the Eagles began to assert themselves.

Eagles went on a 14-0 run, including back-to-back threes from Charles Smith (Final MVP) and Chapman, as the Jets' offense dried up. Chez Marks and Steven Gayle finally got the Jets scoring again after around five minutes without a basket but Eagles' player-coach Fab Flournoy was keeping the Eagles in control; first scoring on a lay-up and then setting up Chapman for an easy score.

Gayle brought the Jets to within 3 points late in the quarter but Darius Defoe and Chapman helped the Eagles to a 15-24 lead after one.

Jets made a fast start again in the second and they pulled to within four points (23-27), prompting the Eagles to call a timeout. The break worked as the Eagles hit back to take a 13-point lead (30-43); Smith the main main for Eagles with 10 points in that spell.

In the last few mins of the 2nd quarter the Eagles began turning it on as the Jets kept turning over the ball and failing to find a way through the Eagles' defence. A 19-10 run from Eagles saw them soar to a deserved 42-64 lead at the half.

The Eagles came out strong in the third and took their lead to 26 points (46-72) early on. Shawn Myers made a couple of good plays for the Jets but they could not get the deficit below 21 points and the Eagles finished the quarter strong thanks to baskets from Smith and Defoe which helped them to a 63-89 lead.

Smith and Defoe continued to dominate the scoring in early in the fourth and it was Smith who broke the 100-point mark with a three-pointer. Midway through the quarter the Jets pulled to within 24 points (78-102).

By this time the game had become a bit choppy and missed lay-ups and a blown dunk from Andrew Sullivan and although the Jets were still battling away, it was over as a contest. Defoe was having a great spell and his dunk with 4 minutes left put the Eagles 25 points ahead (81-106).

Jets continued to play hard until the final hooter but it was too big a deficit for them to claw back and the Eagles held on to retain the trophy they won last season.
